Fresh, Local, Sustainable Food for NE Iowa

Kymar Acres - Kyle and Mari Holthaus

Kymar Acres is owned and operated by Kyle & Mari Holthaus, with a little help from Teddy (6) and Violet (4).  Teddy is in Kindergarten and Violet is in preschool and they both really enjoy gardening, especially the greenhouse work.  Our farm is 15 acres located right in between Decorah and Waukon.  We raise flowers, herbs, a flock of laying hens and the pigs that Jeremy and Jodi Peake market and have been with GROWN Locally since 1999.

The flowers and herbs are raised, without any chemical fertilizers or insecticides, in an ‘organic’ manner; however our farm is not certified organic.

Our chickens are fed conventional feed but they are truly free range.  In the months that are warm enough our chickens have run of the farm, eating as many bugs and as much grass and plants as they want.  We plan to set up a hen house among our pastured pigs to allow the chickens a good place for foraging while cleaning up the feed the pigs waste.  The eggs produced in such a way are the best tasting and have a much darker yolk color, along with thicker shells.

The hogs are also fed conventional feed, but are given no antibiotics or meat products in their feed.  They are raised in deeply bedded open pens with access to the outdoors, in the appropriate weather.  Our farrowing is also done in bedded pens not in any farrowing crates, and the piglets are not weaned for at least 6 weeks after being born.

Kymar Acres is proud to be a member of GROWN Locally and helping to promote the benefit of local products to Northeast Iowa.
